The Outbreak Of War | The Final Straw For Vietnam And The Outbreak Of Violence
The depiction of the helmet on a United States soldier during the Vietnam War stating "Kill A Gook For God" symbolises the tone of the war. it was a war full of hate, maliciousness, and inhumanity.
The first personnel sent to Vietnam by USA in 1950 were not combat troops but instead were advisory personnel to the democratic South Vietnam. By this time, the Democratic Republic of North Vietnam had been converted to communism and this was causing concern for the United States as they had observed a pattern that they had dubbed "The Domino Effect". America, led by President Dwight D. Eisenhower (in office from 20 January 1953- 20 January 1961), had seen country after country (eg - China, Korea, and now Vietnam) in East Asia convert to communism and they were concerned that the spread of communism would soon threaten their capitalist way of life.
the use of weapons by the United States military was very liberal, especially under President Lyndon Johnson who was the 36th president of the United States of America. it could be argued, controversially, that the Americans used this war as an excuse to use Vietnam as a test subject for their new types of warfare including napalm bombs and the chemical known as agent orange. the testing of new weapons on Asian countries during war time by the United States is not unheard of prior to the Vietnam War. By August 1945, a successful test of an atomic bomb occurred by the hand of the Allied Manhattan Project, and on August 6 1945 a Uranium gun-type atomic bomb; dubbed "Little Boy", was dropped on the Japanese city of Hiroshima, and on August 9 1945 a plutonium implosion-type bomb, dubbed "Fat Man", on the city of Nagasaki. this is the only instance where nuclear weapons have been used during war.
The Vietnamese had recently rid themselves of the French powers that had a hold of them since the 17th century as a direct result of WWII. the French Withdrawal occurred from 1950-1954. this new American intervention sparked the end of the final straw for the Northern communists and they decided that it was past time to fight back for their own freedom
the official start of the war from an historic point of view was July 8 1959, due to the deaths of Major Dale R. Buis and Master Sergeant M. Ovnand. these two men were serving in Bienhoa at a US military Air Base when the Vietnamese guerillas made their first of many stands in the War by attacking the Base and overpowering the small US force stationed at the Base. these two men were the first US/allied casualty of the war and hence sparked the 16 year violent struggle between the communists of North Vietnam (Viet Minh - North/Viet Cong - South), led by President Ho Chi Minh and the democratic south vietnam, led by President Ngo Dinnh Diem.
as a result, south vietnam president Diem begins to crack down on communism in south Vietnam, which ignites the wrath of the north and violence erupts throughout the nation.
in 1960 John f. kennedy defeats richard nixon and secures his first term as the President of the united states of america, Succeeding former president Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Meanwhile in Vietnam, South Vietnamese President Diem narrowly survives a coup attempt due to rumours circulating the nation, stating that he was a "puppet president" to the US.
Coup attempt = A small Force attempting to overthrow the government
in north vietnam, President Ho Chi Minh imposes military conscription in an attempt to combat the huge force that the US possessed and was using to aid the south. also in another attempt to combat the US power in the south, he forms the Viet Cong. the viet cong was the North Vietnamese national liberation front for south vietnam - south vietnamese communism army. they were mostly made up of guerillas and people of any shape, size, gender, or age. this made it very difficult and frustrating for the US to retaliate as they had no idea who their enemy actually was, what they looked like, and especially, where they were.
